Most Polar Reversed-Phase Column
In reversed-phase mode, cyano columns are the most polar and least retentive of all reversed-phase packings. Extremely hydrophobic compounds which do not elute in standard C18 and C8 packings can be retained using typical reversed-phase eluents. In addition, the unique nitrile chemistry provides different selectivity from both phenyl and standard aliphatic (C18, C8, and C4) reversed-phase packings. Large pore-size 300Å packing materials are also available for the analysis of biomolecules in order to utilize this unique selectivity.
Useful in Both Reversed-Phase and Normal-Phase Modes
YMC-Pack CN can be used in both reversed-phase and normal-phase modes since it utilizes a cyanopropyl group of medium polarity bonded to the stationary phase. Hydrophobicity is relatively low for a reversed-phase packing material, exhibiting different selectivity from C18 due to π electrons from the cyano group. In reversed-phase mode, YMC-Pack CN is useful for shortening analysis time when retention is too long using C18, or when different selectivity is required to optimize the separation.
