A Primer on our Ion Exchange Columns

In this month’s news, we at YMC America would like to talk more about our ion exchange columns as well as the other ion exchange products we offer online.

YMC America’s Ion Exchange columns are designed for separating:

  • Antibody drugs and other large biomolecules
  • Proteins and peptides
  • Nucleic acids
  • Oligonucleotides

Available in both QA (quaternary amine) and SP (sulfopropyl) ion exchange chemistries, our BioPro series IEX columns provide several distinct advantages. Not only are they fully scalable for preparative purification and polishing, but they also exhibit high recovery rates for biomolecules and fast analysis at high flowrates, providing unparalleled speed and resolution.  BioPro columns are available in 3, 5, and 6 µm non-porous particles for analytical scale and semi-prep separations, as well as 5, 10, 30, and 75-micron porous particles for prep.

Preparative Overview of YMC BioPro IEX Columns/Materials

Our BioPro IEX columns feature the following characteristics:

  • Sulfopropyl chemistry for strong cation exchange (SCX)
  • Quaternary amine chemistry for strong anion exchange (SAX)
  • Superb dynamic binding capacity (DBC)
  • Low nonspecific adsorption
  • High loading capacity with low operating pressure, even at high flow rates

YMC-BioPro Q30, Q75, S30, and S75 are high-performance ion exchange resins designed to be used for the purification/processing of peptides, proteins, oligonucleotides, and antibodies at both the industrial and laboratory scale. These products are manufactured utilizing a next-generation hydrophilic polymer matrix (methacrylate), with particle sizes in both 30 µm and 75 µm, with 1000Å pore size.

These IEX materials provide low nonspecific adsorption, high binding capacity, and excellent sample recovery. To further assist in sharpening resolution, YMC-BioPro possesses a narrow particle size distribution. Additionally, YMC America’s BioPro materials feature low operating pressure, making them easy to apply in high flow applications. Typically, customers prefer to purchase 30 µm materials for purification of large sample volumes at high flow rates. In contrast, 75 µm materials are better suited for high capacity capture steps as well as efficient intermediate purification steps.

History shows that uptake of innovation is metered in the biopharma industry, but if the invention has checked all the “user need” boxes, its acceptance has an inflection point. This inflection point, when graphed, resembles a hockey stick (hopefully pointing
