YMC offers “bare” silica, silica-based normal phase, and a wide variety of silica-based reversed phase materials for preparative applications. These materials are available in bulk supply or packed in preparative scale columns. Particle sizes include: 10µm, 15µm, 20µm, 50µm, 75µm, and 150µm.

The particle size, pore size, and overall quality of all sizes of products are strictly controlled. All materials are available on conventional standard spherical silica, or on superior mechanical strength silica (YMC-HG type) for enhanced durability across unpacking/repacking cycles.

Comparison of Mechanical Strength

Different materials have different levels of physical resiliency under the rigors of wetting with organic solvents and aqueous buffers. In addition, the physical stresses of un-packing and re-packing a column can lead to shearing and crushing of the packing material. The fractured particles – fines – congest the interstitial spacing of the spherical particles, which leads to an increase in backpressure.

The test results below compare the effect of packing/un-packing cycles on YMC conventional silica, YMC-HG type silica, and YMC-Triart hybrid silica. For applications where un-packing and re-packing are required, either YMC-HG-type (described on this page) or YMC-Triart (described elsewhere) materials demonstrate an advantage.
