3 Ideal Columns for Analyzing Polar Compounds

Chromatographers often struggle with retention of polar compounds on C18 columns due to the non-polar nature of this type of stationary phase. Take a look at these three products, courtesy of our team here at YMC America, Inc., that are specifically designed to analyze polar compounds.

1.  YMC-Pack ODS-AQ

Useful for Separations with High Aqueous Mobile Phases

YMC-Pack ODS-AQ is a unique, reversed-phase material designed for moderate hydrophobicity and hydrogen-bonding capacity, as well as a relatively hydrophilic surface. Due to its hydrophilic surface, ODS-AQ is capable of being “wetted” with polar eluents. It grants chromatographers reproducible retention as well as exceptional peak shape with highly aqueous mobile phases.

Strong Retention of Polar Compounds

When using high-aqueous mobile phases, ODS-AQ allows for longer retention of polar compounds than normal ODS packings due to the polar end-capping used with this phase.

2.  YMC Hydrosphere C18

Strong Retention of Hydrophilic Compounds

Hydrosphere C18 is designed to maintain adequate hydrophilicity on the packing surface for superior separation of hydrophilic compounds.  Hydrophilic compounds are retained with much greater affinity on Hydrosphere C18, particularly when using 100% aqueous mobile phases, which are typically problematic for conventional ODS columns.  Hydrosphere C18 is useful for separating a wide range of compounds, including nucleic acids and their derivatives, organic acids, saccharides, glycosides, and peptides.

3.  YMC-Triart Diol-HILIC

Retention and Separation of Extreme Polar Compounds

Triart Diol-HILIC is a dihydroxypropane moiety bonded to an organic/inorganic hybrid-based silica particle. The ensuing product has incredible durability and usability over a

wide range of pH (2-10). It is ideal for the separation of extremely polar and hydrophilic compounds that are not retained by reversed phase (C18, C8, etc.) chromatography. YMC-Triart Diol-HILIC is designed to retain polar compounds while utilizing reversed phase eluents and buffers that are suitable for LC-MS.
